Argentina Government Considers Extending Fire Emergency Law

The Government is considering extending the Fire Emergency Law by decree due to the crisis caused by wildfires while studying the inclusion of budget increases requested by governors in the agenda for extraordinary sessions. This was decided by the Government after a meeting of the political table at the Casa Rosada, according to official sources reported by the Argentine News Agency. The Chief of Staff, Manuel Adorni, announced the call for this Thursday, which was scheduled for next Wednesday, amid the crisis in the south of the country due to forest fires. Patagonian governors are asking Congress to treat the Fire Emergency Law as “urgent” within the framework of extraordinary sessions, warning that the magnitude of the fires and the impact of the climate crisis in Patagonia require additional resources and tools both for firefighting and for assisting affected communities. The political table meeting was led by Adorni and the Secretary General of the Presidency, Karina Milei, along with the head of the Senate bloc, Patricia Bullrich; the presidential advisor Santiago Caputo; the Ministers Luis Caputo (Economy) and Diego Santilli (Interior); the Secretary of Strategic Affairs of the Chief of Staff, Ignacio Devitt, and the head of the Chamber of Deputies, Martín Menem, who attended virtually. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Security has allocated $129.244 million to strengthen the National Volunteer Firefighters System, focusing on equipment, operation, training, oversight, and operational maintenance of the federal emergency response system. This was done through Resolution 91/2026 signed by Minister Alejandra Monteoliva.
